ILOILO CITY -- Fernando Poe Jr. berated a television news reporter Thursday
night when she suddenly appeared on stage while he was addressing a campaign
rally in Tigbauan town, some 22 km south of this city.

GMA Network reporter Sandra Aguinaldo said she was surprised at the way Poe
embarrassed her in front of the crowd.

In an interview with the Inquirer and in a live broadcast over GMA Channel 7's
"24 Oras" newscast, Aguinaldo said she had gone up the stage to do a "stand
upper," or an on-the-scene report.

But because there were many people on the stage, she was forced to stand close
to Poe who was giving his speech.

Poe then came to her side and offered her the microphone he was holding.

"Would you like to speak?" Aguinaldo quoted Poe as saying to her. She said she
could only shake her head and step back in reply.

"Hindi nga, gusto mo yata magsalita (Really, it looks like you want to speak),"
she said Poe insisted. She said she only shook her head some more and retreated
from her position.

After Poe finished his speech, she said his running mate Sen. Loren Legarda and
spokesperson Sen. Vicente Sotto III approached her and demanded that she
apologize to the actor.

Aguinaldo told them she had only meant to do a stand upper-something she said
Legarda understood being a former broadcast journalist.

But she said that Legarda told her, "Mag-apologize ka para matapos na
(Apologize to get it over with)."

She told them she was the one who was embarrassed by Poe and she didn't want to
apologize.

Later, Legarda told another reporter it was Sotto's idea to make Aguinaldo
apologize. For her part, Legarda said what she did "was done in good faith
since the situation was unclear at the time."

Over GMA-7, Aguinaldo said she felt insulted by Sotto's and Legarda's demand
because she was only doing her job.

Nevertheless, she approached Poe, who told her that what she did was wrong.

"Ang sabi ko sa kanya di ko naman gusto na agawan ka ng eksena pero ginagawa ko
lang ang trabaho ko (I told him I didn't want to grab the spotlight but I was
only doing my job)," she said she told Poe.

She said Poe raised his voice and told her: "Ang lagay nyan ako pa ang may
kasalan (So now it's my fault)."

Aguinaldo told the Inquirer she explained to Poe what a stand upper was and Poe
replied, "'Hindi yun eh, yung mga tao nakatingin sa iyo (It wasn't that; you
grabbed the people's attention).'"

Why was she surprised? FPJ was making a speech. Isn't he entitled to
no interruptions? Isn't he entitled to respect?

Mag 'day. Ano 'yan? Kabastos ninyo namang mga journalist. Kay FPJ ang
programa o ang exsena, ang gusto ninyo kayo ang makita at marinig ng madla.
I would have done the same to her, ng matuto ng modo ang Pinay from Pinas na
iyan.

Baka naman segment ng "The Buzz" ang ginagawa niya.?

I wonder what would Ping Lacson do, if I do my stand-up on the same stage .
. . at the same time he is giving a political speech?

"Blah, blah, blah . . . yakety, yakety . . . yada, yada . . . It is a take
man."

Whoa! Do you think I will end-up in the salvage area?

With the increasing aggressiveness of media reporters, sometimes it
helps to put them in their proper places.

First it was flashbulbs popping inches from one's face; then it was
cassette recorders inches from one's face, sometimes at the end of long
poles; then it became super closeups of one's face on TV, while giving
the interviewer all the good angles. Media reps as a group are are
IMPOLITE, inconsiderate and overly aggressive.

"The people have a right to know," but coming from representatives of
commercial, for-profit publications, that chestnut doesn't sound so
convincing.

In this case it is real crass for a member of the press actually doing
the report on the same stage as FPJ and being louder than him as well,
this is not possible in the US, the press is not allowed to share the
dais, but away from it.

if that reporter happened to be male, he would have been punched in
the nose. you ain't seen nothing yet. it's not hard to picture him
barging in news offices accompanied by an entourage of thug-looking
security armed to the teeth when he becomes the most powerful man in
the pinas. at this point he's probably thinking to himself, "wait till
i take over malacanang." scary thought, though, if you are a
know-it-all newsperson in the pinas.

What is the matter, Renowl? Did you lose your handle?

What you wrote about thugs as bodyguards is not new. They have that in the
Pinas way back in the sixties. I recall during my young days when I used to
attend street dance parties (that's where I got the nickname, "Bakya"),
before the mayor of the town entered - at least four ugly guys carrying high
powered rifles entered first.

These politicians in the Pinas have progressed from intimidation (sindakan)
into salvaging which is now called rub-out. By the way, is 'rub-out' a
literal translation of "Burado?"

It is a long story and I have difficulty articulating it. It was long time
ago.

Like you, I don't want him for president. But I think he was the victim
of extreme disrespect and now the aggressor is being set up as the
victim by her cohorts in the media. Fuck her and her gang.
